Rice paper is an extremely old product dating back to Ancient China where it was first used by painters and craftsmen. Silk was the medium of choice for painters and craftsmen prior to the discovery of rice paper as a unique product that offered more benefits than silk.

The durability and the fact that rice paper is both rot proof and mothproof made it ideal for painting, calligraphy, and printing. Originally made from rice straw (hence the name), paper made out of bamboo or mulberry is also classified as rice paper, with bamboo based rice paper superseding rice straw based rice paper in usage since the 10th century. Rice paper is perfect for lanterns because it is wrinkle and crumple resistant.
