The metal expander is used
1. for hanging the paper lantern

Inserting the metal expander into each lantern takes about 10 seconds

Each square white paper lantern has an opening on the top and bottom. To light our paper lanterns, battery operated lights or electric light kits can be inserted through the top.
The battery lights or electric lights are then suspended in the middle of the paper lantern.
